A long tail keyword is a phrase of three or more words which is related to your main keywords but
has less traffic associated with it.
Why would you want to target phrases with less traffic?
Most content creators go for the big, obvious one and two keyword phrases and ignore these longer
search phrases. Thankfully, less competition means fewer pages in the results, making it easier for
you to rank highly.
Take a look at the Google Keyword Planner and you’ll see that many long tail keywords attract a
good amount of traffic.
For example, at the time of writing, photography has 450,000 monthly searches with over one and a
half billion search results, making it an impossibly difficult keyword to target successfully.
However, the long tail phrase tilt shift photography has a respectable 10,000 searches a month but
only three million pages in the results. That means a good, in-depth post on the subject with only a
handful of links to it should rank well for that term.
When considering your overall keyword strategy, don’t forget long-tail keywords. For many
established websites (including the sites I run) the combined number of visits from long-tail
keywords is greater than those generated by the main keywords.
That’s not surprising, given that long tail keywords account for 70% of all search engine queries. But
there’s another benefit to creating content with the long tail in mind; those queries tend to be used by
people about to buy. Someone searching for phones is just browsing, while someone searching for
Apple iPhone best price probably has their credit card out already.
That means if you’re selling products or doing affiliate marketing you should definitely be targeting
long tail keywords. If you’re generating revenue with AdSense, you’ll often find visitors who find your
site via long tail searches are more likely to click ads as they continue searching for the best deal.

Search engine optimization is achieved through a wide variety of methods. Many webmasters or SEO professionals will focus on proper keyword research, clarity in the setup of your website’s headers, tags, file names and descriptions, external backlinking, internal cross linking, and quality content creation.
While each search engine uses its own algorithm for determining the ranking of every page that is indexed, it is possible to increase your rankings by making your site informative and visible via both on-page and off-page techniques. Audio: How can you make Google work better for you when you’re searching? Here are a few tips and tricks to get you started.

Let’s say we’re doing research on the impact of multiracial people & culture in America. We’re just getting started, so we’ll type “multiracial” into the Google search box.

Audio: Notice that we are getting all kinds of results using this search — from Wikipedia, to a site called “blackflix.com,” to even some government websites thrown in there. We can do better. Let’s try adding some keywords to narrow our search — I’ll try multiracial AND culture

Audio: When you type multiple words into the search box, Google will look ONLY for those results that have ALL of your keywords. In fact, Google does this by default so you don’t even have to type “AND” if you don’t want to.

Even just adding one keyword has given us way fewer results (even though there are probably still more than we want). You can keep experimenting with different keywords in different combinations to see how Google will work for you.

You can also broaden your search by asking Google to look for synonyms or related ideas using the word “OR.” Instead of just “multiracial,” I’ll try looking for “multiracial” OR “biracial.”

Audio: This search will find anything that has either the word “multiracial” OR “biracial” (or both) AND also “culture.” Notice that by adding this alternate term, we have cast a wider net and so we are getting more results than our last search.

Lastly, you can use Google to search for more complicated words and phrases using quotation marks to conduct a “phrase search.” Let’s try using the specific phrase “multicultural identity” in our search this time.

Audio: Ok, so this search found results that have the both the word “culture” AND the exact phrase “multiracial identity” — it will not find instances of the word “multiracial” in one part of the website, and the word “identity” somewhere else! This is a handy search for compound words, names, or phrases, but remember that once you put quotation marks around it, Google will look for that EXACT string of letters — it will not find misspellings of that phrase for you, like it usually would in other searches. So when using phrase search, make sure you double check your spelling!

Try experimenting with different combinations of AND, OR, and phrase searching to make the most of your Google search.
